Start your day with Quiet

Two Simple Techniques to Calm Your Mind and Relax Your Body

Modern life rarely slows down. Between work, family, and the constant stream of demands on our time and attention, it's easy to feel as though our minds are always switched on.

As someone who has balanced a busy healing practice alongside raising three children, I understand how challenging it can be to find moments of genuine calm. Often, it's only when we finally climb into bed that our minds decide it's the perfect time to replay conversations, revisit unfinished tasks, and plan tomorrow's to-do list.

The good news is that a calm mind is something we can develop.

Like any skill, it becomes stronger with practice. Just as we exercise our bodies to build physical strength, we can train our minds to become calmer, more focused, and more resilient. Start with just a few minutes each day and allow your practice to develop naturally over time.

Technique One: Calm the Mind

Begin by creating a quiet space where you won't be disturbed. Silence your phone, sit comfortably in a supportive chair, keep your spine upright, and place both feet flat on the floor.

Take several slow, gentle breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Allow your attention to settle on the natural rhythm of your breathing.

As thoughts arise—and they will—simply notice them without judgement. There's no need to follow them or push them away. Acknowledge each thought, then gently return your attention to your breath.

If your mind continues to feel busy, imagine a clear, flowing river moving peacefully through your awareness. Visualise each thought gently floating away on the water, leaving your mind feeling clearer, quieter, and more spacious with every breath.

Remain here for several minutes, allowing your breathing to become slower and your mind increasingly still.

Technique Two: Relax the Body

Stress doesn't only affect the mind—it is often held within the body.

Sit comfortably with your feet supported and your spine upright. Close your eyes if that feels comfortable.

Beginning with your toes, slowly bring your awareness to each part of your body. Gradually move your attention through your feet, ankles, calves, knees, thighs, hips, abdomen, back, chest, shoulders, arms, hands, neck, face, and the top of your head.

Notice any areas of tension without trying to change them. Simply becoming aware of where you are holding stress is often the first step towards releasing it.

Now imagine each slow, deep breath carrying light, warmth, and relaxation into every part of your body. As you continue your body scan, allow each exhalation to soften any areas of tightness or discomfort.

If you notice a particular area holding tension, gently give it permission to relax. You may find it helpful to silently repeat:

"My body is completely relaxed. With every breath I become calmer, lighter, and more at ease."

Repeat this affirmation several times, allowing your body to respond naturally.

Bringing the Practice into Daily Life

These two techniques take only a few minutes, yet when practised consistently they can have a profound effect on your overall wellbeing. They can help you cultivate greater calm, improve your ability to manage stress, and create more space for clarity and balance in your daily life.

Transformation rarely happens overnight. It comes through small, intentional practices repeated over time.

I hope these exercises support you in creating moments of stillness within your day and help you reconnect with the calm that already exists within you.
